Home Appliances without electricity usage

When I was a kid, Most of families had all traditional items at home for meeting the home needs.

As days moved on, people started to buy items which works with the help of electricity. Listed below are few among them.

Tube light

Fan
Table Fan
mixie
Grinder

Vacuum Cleaner
Washing machine

Slowly, the traditional items started to disappear in many houses as it was occupying considerable amount of space in the room.

Now, that we are  seeing frequent power cuts, people started using inverter. The domestic inverter does not support the power consumption of heavy items like grinder , washing machine etc.

Well, why to go for inverter, when we still have items which works without electricity. It is good that we grab them from the market before it run out of stock.

Pictures provided for easy reference folks...

 Candle Lamp

 Panai Olai visiri

 Traditional mixie (Ammi kal)

Traditional Wet Grinder (Attan kal)

Traditional Dry Grinder (Ural with Ulakkai)

 little ural for grinding spices
Broom for cleaning

Washing stone for clothes
Pictures got by searching in Google images

I know.. In the fast moving world, we can't afford to spend hours of time in using these stuff.

This is just a post to record the items which were used in the past generation (of course still used in current generation too.. :-)

Bed time stories

Our little darling at home, sleeps after hearing bed time stories. Every day he used to ask for new stories.

But these days his story line is fixed. We have to tell him tom and Jerry story only. He picked up this as he liked the tom and Jerry cartoon much.

His favourite episodes: Tom & Jerry with Duck

Every day we have to tell new episodes. But how do we tell new episodes without watching them? So we started our own Tom and Jerry episode.

Tom and Jerry Attending school...
Tom and Jerry going to beach...
Tom and Jerry travel in train to native for vacation...
Tom and Jerry visiting the Park...
Tom and Jerry doing shopping... etc etc..

The stories tied up with his activities.. It went on for a week and he understood the story line. On knowing story is coming to end, he started to modify the story line by a twist and making us to drag the story.

Upon completion of the lengthy story, he will ask for next story. I told him that I forgot and need some time to think and tell. Suddenly he told; Amma, I will tell a story. You listen and tell me back the same story. Clever boy. He said one tom and Jerry episode and asked me to repeat it. We have to tell it back, with the same story line as he said. If I make mistake he corrects it too. Oh no. This is tough.. A bed time story at 11pm and that too without making mistakes..

Atbroker.exe application error

I use remote desktop to connect to a PC with Windows 7 . Got the Atbroker.exe application error followed by black screen. Could not view the desktop despite closing and reopening the session. Same error throw-ed out.

On surfing net, got a solution which works most of time.

Press "CTRL-ALT-END" (the equivalent of “CTRL-ALT-DEL” for remote sessions) followed by ESC / starting Task Manager from the options listed. - It worked for me.

When it doesn’t work, log in with another user and kill the session with the issue or reboot the pc.

Pentaxim Vs EasyFive

This post is about the DTP vaccine for babies.

DTP which is supposed to cover the vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus.

Wiki states below for DTap and DTwP:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DTaP (also DTPa and TDaP) - is a combined vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, in which the pertussis component is acellular. This is in contrast to whole-cell, inactivated DTP (aka DTwP)
The acellular vaccine uses selected antigens of the pertussis pathogen to induce immunity. Because it uses fewer antigens than the whole cell vaccines, it is considered safer, but it is also more expensive. Most of the developed world has switched to DTaP, but developing countries continue to use DTP.Recent research suggests that the DTP vaccine is more effective than DTaP in conferring immunity; this is because DTaP's narrower antigen base is less effective against current pathogen strains.
The acellular vaccine is safer to administer in that it causes substantially fewer side-effects (estimated at 90% fewer), which commonly include local pain and redness, and/or fever.
DTaP was developed in Japan in 1981.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now doctors suggest the painless injection (Pentaxim), saying the medicine works the same, but the child will not cry in pain, but we have to pay more (medicine is costly). For the comfort of the infant, parents also go for it.

Below is the detail got in internet for the two medicines.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Both vaccines provide protection against five diseases but there is a difference in the diseases covered.
Pentaxim covers Diptheria, Whooping cough (by acellular component, which adds to cost but has less pain, fever for the infant), Tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b and IPV (injectable polio vaccine).
Easy Five covers Diptheria, Whooping cough (cellular component, which is cheap but has more chances of side effects like pain, fever for the infant), Tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b and Hepatitis B. Pentaxim is costlier vaccine.
Whichever vaccine you choose, protection MUST be provided for the six diseases. Thus with Pentaxim, you have to give additional Hepatitis B vaccine and with Easy Five, additional Polio vaccine (oral polio vaccine or the costlier injectable polio vaccine). The protection offered for the diseases that these two products offer is comparable but the side effects are somewhat lower with Pentaxim. In summary, you will have to make the decision on the basis of above facts, especially cost considerations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Four years back, Doctor at native refused to put Easy Five stating that he prefers to put DTP , HIB and Hepatatis B separately. In a period of four years, new medicines have come and reduced the number of injections to the infant.

Though few vaccines are clubbed to a single injection, every year new vaccines are coming and chart is growing big and bigger.

Hanuman asks Jangiri?

In the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi (normally comes between Dec 15 and Jan 14). I could not visit the temple this time, however saw the picture of deity decorated with jangiri (sweet similar to that of jilebi of north india). I could not post a picture of the same here for reference.

I only have a temple website link which states the same.

[On the day of Moola nakshathiram vadai malai, vetrilai malai and jangiri malai are dedicated devotedly to the God.]

I have heard that vadamalai offering to Anjaneya other than the butter, tulsi etc.Hanuman being the God of strength these vadamalai (full of protein content) is offered and distributed to the people to inherit the strength like Hanuman.

On surfing net, I could see offerings like sandal, coconut, sugarcane, fruits , vegetables and even dry fruits has been used for decorating the God.

Below are few such pictures of Lord Hanuman.

Susindram Anjaneyar in sandhana alangaram

Namakkal Anjaneyar in butter alangaram

Nellai Anjaneyar in coconut alangaram

Anjaneyar in sugar cane alangaram

anjaneyar in vadai, butter , grapes ,cherry & tulasi alangaram

Anjaneyar in vadamaalai alangaram

Anjaneyar in fruits alangaram

Anjaneyar in dry fruits alangaram

But when they started this jangiri?

Could that be because vadamalai is hot and spicy and people wanted to eat something sweet along with it ?

Or this came from north india where people like sweets and this is the one which can be added to a string like maalai ?Anjaneya, english, God, hanuman,

Or sweet stall people wanted to boost up the sales of sweets by this?

Or Lord Hanuman itself wanted to taste sweet and asked jangiri ?

என்னுள் தோன்றியவை...

*********************************************************************************

(e.g widow )

I'm back!!!

Yippee!!! I'm back after a break.

A pregnant colleague of mine had told that, if she gets chance to talk to God, she will request that, Men should also undergo the process of pregnancy like women.

I was on my maternity leave that time. Oh my God! what happened to her? Women should be happy and proud that they blessed with this ability.

Men can only reach a place of becoming an obstetrician and perform the delivery of a women.

In a movie, comedy actor vivek said, ladies are telling they are pregnant and getting privileges, however there are men , who live with big tummy till their life time.
Big tummy for decade does not make any sense, when compared to a live fetus at womb for a week. It was not a joke actually.

As far as I know, Only male seahorse is blessed to have the gestation of 2 to 6 weeks in its pouch and hatch the eggs.

A sudden thought came to my mind. Would men be ready to undergo the process for 40 weeks like women do? Not at all. May be, few want to try just to explore how it would be and few might be ready to take, if they get good salary package for the 280 days job. (good joke?)

Men are designed to sweat.. they are capable of doing hard things. They cant afford to do tender job. Why to request God for a role change or perform dual role ?

Drishti Bommai

'Drishti Bommai' AKA 'Ward of the Evil Eye’ is kept in front of the buildings while in construction.

These Dolls are considered to be the remover of `evil eyes'.

The simple one would be, drawn face of devil on a pumpkin or a man created with straws and face drawn with charcoal on a white paint pot.

picture for reference below:

Recently I came across an entirely different ward.. posting here for your view.

Probably the owner of building thought that, there are pretty big evils in the city and the ward should be big enough to frighten them up. ha ha ha. LOL.

Glass Bangles

When it comes to decoration, first item we choose is flowers.

In temples , God is also decorated with colorful flowers and garlands.

There are cases i have observed with the goddess that decorations are made with fruits and vegetables during the season when their prices come down.

I had seen in some amman temples during the month of aadi, goddess is decorated with glass bangles. I had not observed or heard in my home town about this. So thought this is something happening in Chennai alone.

But when i saw in news paper this year, I could see this is happening in amman temple of all south Tamilnadu region.
Below is a picture showing such decoration made of glass bangles.

Like flowers, these bangles are offered to the god by people before the decoration day. Later the bangles are then distributed to people who visit the temple.

Though there are many varieties of bangles available in market, glass bangles deserve a special place. Still question peeps in.

When there are lot of women accessories, what could be the special reason for choosing the bangles for decoration?? Could it be because it is affordable and available in market easily like the flowers ? then why the month aadi is selected for it instead of all time?

If you have an answer leave them in comments box..

adieu to 25 paise

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced, with today 25 paise coin is closed.

There were days, when I used to get handful of ground nut candies. Even mini cone icecream was just 25 paise.

Though we say bye-bye to the coin today, I have handful of those coins kept safe in my cupboard for the next-generation in the family. They would also know history in picture on seeing those coins..

How to hide Facebook profile from search engines

You all may be knowing that you can easily find any person on Facebook right from Google or any other search engines. The basic information like your name, profile picture, gender and networks are visible to everyone. Just search your name in Google and you will see your facebook’s profile in the results page.

But just in case you don’t want your Facebook profile to be shown in search engines, you can easily do this from your Facebook - "Privacy Settings page".

Follow the following steps to remove your Facebook profile from Search Engine cache

1. Login to your Facebook Profile and click the Account tab on the top right corner of the page and select the Privacy Settings option. A new page will open up.

2. In this page, find "Apps and Websites" which will be in the bottom left corner of the page, and click on "Edit your settings" link next to it.

3. On the next page you will see "Public Search" at the bottom of the page, click on "Edit settings" button at the right of "Public Search".

4. Uncheck the "Enable Public Search" option.

Now your Facebook profile will be completely removed from search engine results page. For some search engines, it may take a few days/weeks to get your Facebook profile out of their cache.

Mehndi - Bridal Makeup

Mehndi ( or Mehendi) is the application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration in India.

In Tamil, it is called as Maruthani. The school where I studied had rule not to apply nailpolish / maruthani while attending school. Still, they had exception during the festival time like diwali .

Every year during the festive season , we used to buy the leaves from market before diwali, prepare the paste and apply in our hands. Those were the traditional methods.

myself , my sis and mother used to apply. As my father, being single male in the family, we don't want to leave him and ask him to apply. He will avoid telling some reason. Also I have observed that only boys who are kids, have this maruthani and men don't apply.

In recent years, the ready-made cone was made available at shops, and people started to use them having pictures of modern art , Arabic designs etc.

This maruthani is an essential part in the bridal makeup too. In some parts of north India, they dedicate a day for this mehendi and all the ladies and little girls spend time in applying mehendi and have a fun time.

I was under impression that this Mehendi/maruthani is for sole use of girls, but I was wrong.. Recently I came across a wedding photo , which made me laugh at the view of it. Well, the bride groom in the photo was also having mehendi in his hand, much better than the bride's design.

I had to cut off their faces before posting here, for privacy reasons..

I thought this guy must be crazy. Then on surfing Wikipedia on mehendi came to know that

"The bridegroom is also painted in some parts of India. In Rajasthan, the grooms are given designs that are often as elaborate as those for brides" - [source: wiki]

hmm.. who knows this might soon come to Tamilnadu too..

Voting Experience

It is Dhanesh's voting experience. We took him to the near by school, yes that is where the people were listed to cast the vote in our area.

Dhanesh, does not like going to school as most of kids, but as it is for casting vote, he came happily. He was firing questions to me and his grand parents.

On entering the room, he asked in loud voice "are we going to vote here only". The polling officers who were busy at work, just looked up and again started to work.

We replied to Dhanesh as "yes. keep queit". But he was not able to keep quiet. He then asked again , "how to vote?" We then pointed the desk where the voting machine was kept and told, we will cast vote there and he has to keep quiet till we leave the room.

My mother voted first, me second and my father next. Dhanesh was with his grand father.

On returning home, we asked him, how do we vote.. He replied as below.

"There is a machine and we have to press the button. Red light glows and then a sound comes in as piiiiiiiing.. he thought for a while and then told, they kept black ink in the finger."

For a three year old boy, he can not understand the purpose of the election and the voting. He will know more during the next election.

silk sarees

Sarees had been a passion for every south Indian female.. (I hope it is still there too.. though we have lot of modern dresses in market) Learning to wear a Saree is a big deal.. I am sure for most of them, either mother or elder sister would be the first level teacher.

The way now the city ladies wear Saree is different from the way their grandma's wear in their home town. That's a different topic. hence let me come to the topic of silk sarees now.

With regard to the the silk sarees in tamilnadu, it got its name from the location where the sarees were waived.. like kancheepuram , aarani, thirubuvanam etc..

but now a days people look for more and more varieties. Hence the vendors started introducing new patterns in silk sarees and giving new names..

Following are the names i hear these days.. vasthirakala, parampara , samuthriga, vivaha, bridal seven etc.. most of them are traditional silk sarees with additional stone work or added colorful embroideries in the silk sarees.

Not sure from where these sarees do come in. may be the base Saree is waived in the traditional way and designs and works are added in some other place.

I only hope the traditional silk Saree names which Tamilnadu has, does not disappear in due course of time..

Now coming to the making of silk sarees.How do the silk sarees are manufactured?

I had visited my cousin's paternal grandparents house in the village and had seen a room full of silk worm cocoons. Her grandfather was explaining the entire process of starting from the eggs till the worms are grown up and cocoons are formed as shown below.

Then they were sold to the merchants.

Later when I visited the govt. exhibition , I came to see the process of how the cocoons are then being converted to get the silk threads.

The silk threads are then dipped in color liquid and used for preparing the colorful silk Saree.

Chinese are the ones who started the manufacturing the silk sarees.

Below is the pic for the growth of the silk worm to moth.

the silk farmers let the caterpillars that made the largest cocoons, to turn into moths. The moths then laid eggs and the eggs hatched out more caterpillars making even bigger cocoons. Over the centuries, the size of the cocoon has increased and silkworm cocoons are now much bigger than the cocoons of other caterpillars. At least half a mile of continuous thread may come from one cocoon.

I have read in magazines that few ladies, refuse to buy/wear silk sarees, for the cause that a huge set of silkworms are being killed. Hmm.. These people never realize that that are eating non-veg (which is accepted as not killing) and for the beauty cosmetic item they use, many animals are used as testing specimen. In fact by buying the silk sarees we are indeed providing an income for the people who have worked for it.

Wait.. So.. where are you going? to buy silk Saree for your self or your loved ones?

book & bedsheet

This post comes in as stated by SPGR to write about my mornings.

During my school days , my morings are not that early. Only during exam days or a week before exams i used to wake up early. That too i have to request my father to wake me up early.

I take a book and bedsheet for study :-) . Yes. It used to be Month of November /December and to keep myself warm, a bedsheet is needed. I would not have even studied for 15 mintutes, but went to fall asleep sitting or laying over book. ha ha ha..

Then after marriage, I had to wake up early as my spouse has to catch staff bus at 7:15. I used to spring into action preparing breakfast and lunch. Pack it up and prepare tea and help him get ready on time. You know what happens next, I send him off and get a nap for 30 - 45 minutes. Wow! A wonderful time for relaxing ,get ready and then go to office.

It was only for short period of time after which he started going by his vehicle or train that i started to wake up late again.

Still I do not follow strict timing in my mornings as my sleeping times are not strict. Soon I will have to make it up.

LKG admission in Chennai schools

I was quite busy with the LKG admission for Dhanesh and could not make my presence in blog for long.

Now back to form and starting the post with the LKG admission experience. Have tried to make this post in a way that It will be helpful for some one who will be looking for LKG admission in future. Here we go...

Everybody would have discussed with your parents about their schooling experience. At those age after independence , child education started at the age of five. Starting from First standard (a.k.a First class.)

During our school days , it started with LKG (lower kinder garden ) and UKG (upper kinder garden ). I am sure parents would have gone to nearby nursery school and got in admission in a single visit. Of course again hunt for school for later standard..

In this generation Pre. KG (pre kinder garden) came in before LKG. It is not still a mandatory, but most of schools ask parent and kid, If they are going to play school and asking for play school name as well.

Its CBSE/ICSE fever every where and we are also part of it. We wanted to get admission for our son in best CBSE school in the city. Main reason for CBSE is that , one can easily get admission to any other school in other states of India in case of transfer for parents.

Our initial analysis on schools last year, gave us an idea that most school start from LKG and we placed him in near by play school for Pre KG. So some of the CBSE schools were removed from list as their admission happens only in Pre KG.

Fine.. all about LKG admission now..

Nothing is constant with regard to the following in the schools.

1. Eligibility age criteria for the ward to admit into LKG
2. Date of Issue of Application
3. Admission procedure
4. Number of seats - for LKG
5. Fee structure - Ofcouse , this come in to picture after you get a seat, but this is necessary to confirm if things are going to be in your limits financially.

Here i mean to say that , It is not only different for each of the schools, but also different almost every year for the same school. Hence do not have a blind conclusion based on the parents review on admission procedure happened couple of years back in the forums.

If your kid has to go LKG in the coming year , you have to start working on it nearly six months before school joining date. Yes that's where admission starts for some of the CBSE schools.

There are people who apply in half-dozen schools but does not get admission in any of them. Still, short list the schools before getting application form. This is very important as board of study being CBSE alone does not guarantee quality education or healthy environment for your kid.

Following are the check list to note before shortlisting the schools. Be it in LKG or any other higher standard.

1. Is the school registered and affiliated
2. No of student in each class. (This is important as there are school, which has 650 seats for LKG having 45 students in a class)
3. School facilities - Playground and park (For kindergarden)
4. Atmosphere around school. - In case if the school happens to be near factories / sewage lorries etc..
5 Fee structure - this is more important as you have to check if you get full benefit for what you pay them...

Action points for knowing the date of issue of application.

1. School website. Most of school has this. Watch them for the admission call.
2. Refer to the news paper
3. Enquire neighbors
4. Check it up with your playschool staff , play school kid's parent.

For our case , it was by luck that we checked with school websites on November 31st and found that Application is issued online from December 1 for three days
Remember , there are schools which issue forms only online on specific day(s) and some school issue form only one day, that too from morning 9 to 12 at the school campus.

Documents collection :

1. Candidate Recent Passport size photo(s)
2. Candidate original Birth certificate & attested xerox copies
3. Candiddate original Community certificate (if not general category) & attested xerox copies
4. Address proof for parents & attested xerox copies (Accepted address proof will be: ration card/ cosumer gas connection pass book, bank passbook/ landline phone bill )

It is good to keep these documents in advance, so that we do not have to run for it in last minute..

Some of the school makes the admission process simple by just applying online. providing the scanned images for the documents. The system generates the date and time for appointment with school. (Both parents and candidate should be present at the school at the time along with hard copy of the application form , documents , application form fee etc)

However some of the school will ask you to fill form online, submit in school in person along with application form fee one day (First visit). Asking you to come again to collect the appointment/meeting card next day(Second visit), Attending the meeting at the fixed time mentioned in the card (Third visit). Finally to checkout the shortlisted candidates list (Fourth visit). Well if the school issues waiting list - once again to school (Fifth visit). This will make you tiresome if both parent are working professional as all these time happens in the school timing of 9 AM to 5 PM which is your work time..

Couple of years back , the schools issued limited application forms based on availability of seats (ie. 300 application for 200 seat availability). Hence the chances of getting seat were easy. But now , most schools issue as many applications within the time frame. On an average a school with 200 seats, nearly 1600 applications are sold out. An additional income for the school from the application form itself.

The admission procedures are not very transparent. Following are some of the information posted / conveyed to parents with regard to selection criteria.

1. Distance between school and home (For kindergarden level they say 5kms to 7kms)
2. Annual income of parents.
3. Candidate performance (Yes. interaction happens between a staff and the kid)

Some of the schools reserve 50% of seats for Alumni parent / Siblings quota. Hence the open category option is just 50% of seats. people say that most of seats are filled in by back doors.. may be 20% get admission by luck as the candidates are choosen from a lot from the eligible group based on the selection criteria.

If your kid name is not present in the shortlisted list, you will have to wait for second list or look for another school. There is no way to check, on what criteria your application was rejected.

A brief note on action points for selection criteria 3. Your child should be able to

1. Tell his/her name, Father name and Mother name and play school name.
2. Tell a rhyme
3. Identify basic shapes (circle , sqare etc) and colors
4. Identify animals , flowers, fruits
5. Some school ask to hold a crayon and do coloring and to draw a circle

Though the kids learn these things from play school , preparing them for this interview mode is quite a challenge.

Please note: These interaction session not only happens in CBSE/ICSE schools but also the state board schools.

Important Note: If your child name is present in the list, then you have to pay the fees and the fund (Yes. It could be for the trust or school building fund.) on the specified date which will confirm the admission. This fund amount stated by the school is fixed and no concession on it. If you cannot afford the donation, go for some other school. Some school ask it in form of refundable deposit. No idea whether the school really returns the entire deposit when the student leaves the school after 14 Years of study. These amount for trust or building fund exists be it a CBSE or matric school.

We applied in some of the CBSE schools and could not get a seat in the open category. We did not want to try back door as the name did not appear in list...

We also came to know that school starts in the month of April for the many CBSE schools, They run for a month and give vacation for six weeks and then re open and mid of june. I don't understand why this overload for a 3 year old kid.

Still Admissions are happening in some of the CBSE schools in city. But we did not want to opt for it now. We'll hunt next year for UKG or a year after that for Standard First.

Now people will be noting that something is still missing in this article.. Yes. Information on fee structure. Though the govt. has said that fees has been regulated, there is no guarantee on it. we have to pay what ever is being asked in school to confirm your ward's admission.

In one of the state board school they told your child is selected and you have to pay 13,000 rupees for the LKG. This is for the entire year and we have to pay next fee only when the kid is going to UKG. The fees has to be paid in a week's time which will confirm the admission. They added that this fees does not cover school uniform cost and fees stated by them is, as per govt. decision.

In CBSE school also the fee structure varies. The minimal annual fees range starts from 25,000 and maximum might be some where around 40,000. This is apart from the donation and back door cost.

Ten years back, people would not have spent this much annual amount for doing the under graduation /post graduation course in Arts and science colleges. Need to check what's the current fee structure there.

This CBSE school fee structure is not only high in chennai alone. Its almost same in other CBSE school in inner districts of tamilnadu.

In one movie Actor Vijay would have stated, "Naan corporation school-la padichu collector anavan da". Even now there are people who have shined in many profession studying in the so-called corporation government schools. The board of study does not really matters. It is the person's ability to utilize the opportunities to come up and shine in life.
