Introducing sports to kids

We started to introduce sports activities to Dhanesh one by one. We showed him the badminton racket and shuttlecock in native.

He immediately jumped and said "hey two kosu bat".

We had been using Electronic-Mosquito-Swatter / Electronic-Fly-Swatter since Dhanesh was a toddler.  The "Mosquito Bat" rather we call it as "kosu bat" (nativity name for mosquito)

below is the picture for mosquito bat. The one on right is with torch and is Dhanesh favourite as he used to play with it by covering the torch light with hankey.

 It took some time for him to understand that it is a sport item. We demonstrated how to play.

He wanted to play with that , but the bat was tall enough as him. Initially, he had bit tough time to play with.  Too early to play badminton at the age of three. Still he went on to play as he had experience with swatting using the mosquito bat.

Unpaid tenant

Last month, as people demolished and cleaned-up the garden in front of our house , a family of mice entered to our house.We had struggled a lot to send them all out except one.

That mischievous creature is well settled and enjoying the life in all the room. We see them running from kitchen to bedroom and to the bathroom. So far it has spoiled couple of books too. We need to catch him before he starts to spoil our dresses and bedsheets in cupboards as the wooden cupboard has a gap and today the moment I opened the door, he/she jumped out of it and ran away in a fraction of second.

We tried the capturing device using a piece of coconut to catch him red headed.

Next day we saw coconut was not there, but the culprit had escaped. Uhh.. it looks the mice is saying "catch me if you can..."

Now the fellow is staying in our house, eating our food and having a comfortable stay for more than a month, but not bothered to pay us rent.

From the way it appears, looks like moonjuru eli , which is a vahanam of Lord Ganesha. People are telling this creature visiting home is good and we are not supposed to kill it. Visiting is okay, but he is visiting outside and staying in our house. We are not completely sure if it is moonjuru eli. Also to our bad luck,  if it makes one of shelf as labor ward, we will soon have a family of mice in our home. It once happened in my native ten years back. A rat used my old notebooks as bed and gave birth to half dozen ones.

Already we have lot of tasks in the to-do list, but this one has taken high priority now.

We cannot send him out and be relaxed unless the bathroom wooden door hole is sealed. It will come back how many times we send him out.

Our goal is to catch him. Lets see how long it's going to take..

Life style changes... (part 1)

  When I was a kid, breakfast/dinner food would mean idly, dosai , upma , pongal. Those delicious chappathi kuruma and poori masala would be prepared occasionally. We considered it as feast. (Note: No pictures posted , as I don't want to make it a feel that of cookery blog by posting food pictures.)

But as days moved on, for the next generation, chappathi and poori went as a routine item and noodles and parotta were considered special. Now after the arrival of pizza and burger, those food we cherished and enjoyed became a normal food.

Doctors are saying, those pizza and burger are not much nutritious and only high in calories and cause danger to future generation if consumed frequently.

We have to make kids understand that those food are to be had occasionally and not as a regular part of meal frequently.

Okay. At-least parents are there to tell their kids. But how about cattle ? Those poor creatures cannot speak and they have to eat what ever their masters provide.

I have seen cattle eating grass, dry grass (vaikol) , and all grains , soy, corn etc..  But these days cattle which are grown up in the city are fed with cooked rice (the no-price
one [subsidized completely] which is given by the Government ) and the spoiled vegetables got at cheap rate from market and peeled of skin of fruits and vegetables etc.

sad to see those creatures too. They also roam in city and eat the food items thrown in the streets. People throw them in carry bags and these creatures dont know how to open it up, so they chew it with the cover. It is said that these bags are getting deposited in animals stomach.

Human , by their life style changes affect not only themselves, but also these poor creatures.

P.S: As title indicates part2 expected in near future..

Travel Vaccine Recommendation for South Africa

 Two years back, my friend got an offer to work on-site. It was to South Africa.

At first he was in idea to take it up, but on knowing that we have to get yellow fever vaccine couple of weeks before travel and mosquitoes are high in South Africa , he preferred to say offshore.

Picture Courtesy:  from Google images.

I was thinking, when Africa and South America has this yellow fever vaccine for outsiders, Asia (of course India) should have something else.

On checking internet, I could find a list posted by a Doctor.

The list would be quite scary to some, but to me it was like a breeze.

We had born in this country, had most of these vaccines and enjoying our life.

DD's favourite game

Deepak is  crawling around the house, however Dhanesh runs. Still, what ever Dhanesh takes,  be it a paper/pencil or toy/gadget or  tricycle/bicycle, Deepak demands for it.  When Dhanesh gives the stuff he has in his hand to Deepak and picks up a new one, Deepak is right behind him for grabbing that too. There was no item where both could work together.

I was under impression that it would take a year still for Dhanu & Deepu to play together without grabbing from each other. I was wrong.

They found a common game to play together. Guess what ? It's the electrical two way switch along the cot side.

Deepak would hold a hand to the wall and use the other hand to knock the switches. Dhanesh would be right near by, to switch it ON if Deepak switches it OFF.

This has become their favorite time-pass event.

below is the picture clicked when DD's [ Dhanesh & Deepak  in short ] were busy with their play.

What? checking if the image is not loaded correctly ? Image loaded correctly. It is a blank image.
DD's DD [Dhanesh Deepak 's Dear Dad in short] felt not to put kids image on web and I too felt the same.

We might change our decision in future. So for now, picture is left to your imagination.

Marriage and Plantain trees

In past generation , marriages did not happen in a mandapam / party hall. The event was happening at the bride's home. If the house was not big enough to hold all the relatives, a pandhal was made in the street and marriages happened.  The bride would then be taken to the groom's house by the groom family. My parents wedding happened this way.

Later, people started to book a hall for conducting marriage. Still, After marriage relatives would then be visiting the bride & groom house. So a pandhal was kept in front of the house, with the welcome board. This would be easy for the visitors to identify the house. lot of spaces would be used in front of house for the visitors to sit and chat under the roof.

When streets were very narrow or houses on the Highway road, no chances of putting big pandhal. Two full grown plantain tree would be tied on entrance with the serial lights welcome board. Full-grown plantain trees are used as they are Eternal tree of evergreen plenty for endless generations!

Recently I came across one house in Chennai in my neighborhood. I could not stop laughing. They had covered the plantain tree with the white sac. Picture shown below.

Reason is obvious. Our area is fully occupied with residential who have cattle's at home. They would be walking along streets all day. To avoid those cattle's damaging the plantain tree's trunk, they have covered it with sac.

Either the people at home, wanted to avoid bad luck due to cattle (they call it as bad sagunam if the tree fell down before the function)  or wanted to safe guard the plantain tree's trunk as it can be used for some other reason post function. At least they believe humans and left the banana part. Else they would have covered that also with sac.

On seeing this, something came to my mind.. Instead of tying a plantain tree and covering with sac, as they rent the welcome board and serial lights, better they rent a plantain tree made of plastic / thermocol. that way cattle wont damage it.

Nagerkovil & Nungu sarbath...

 During my childhood days, when we visited to my native, I heard about nungu sarbath. It is available only in the district of Kanyakumari and may be you will find such sarbath stalls till you reach tirunelveli.

 I had tasted it once, the blend of sarbath with ice and nungu was really good. When i informed my best half (yes.. not just better half..) about it, he wanted to taste that.

Below is the picture of sarbath we took during our recent trip there.

Sarbath was horrible. Mainly the reason was, we saw how it was prepared.

We were under impression that they will take the nungu from the big shell , peel of skin and mix it with sarbath and smash it with some sort of smasher or mixer. But to our shock it was not done that way. The lady just took two tablespoon of peeled off nungu pieces with the water and poured them into tumbler directly and pour a tablespoon of sarbath and filled up the remaning space of tumbler with water. mixed it with spoon and handed it to us.

A sarbath without ice.. uhh.. people would say , the chilli bajji if consumed after it cooled down will taste like a sweet cake . How can you drink a juice like this without the chilling. The lady said ice was over.  The water she had in shop was also warm due to the hot climate.

Ultimately we ended up having something which was purely our bad luck. Dhanesh appa emptied the cup as he does not have the habit of wasting food though it does not taste good.

When I was discussing this with my sister and she was telling that there are stalls which will sell fruit juice. Its not the normal fruit juice. I guess it is a mix up of fruit juice. I'm not sure if that is also mixed with sarbath. I said I don't want to try that. By that time, my mother responded that it will be tasty, she had it years back. I replied, to my mom. It tasted good years back like the nungu sarbath I had. Now that will also be horrible. I don't want to try that.

Tips:

* Never look into the process how it is prepared be it the road side stall or hotel. you would not like to eat it if you do so.
* Ask for requirements clearly before placing an order. A Sarbath could not be had without ice, like we have other fruit juices.

Human Evolution

Ten years back, I found the below type of pictures on the internet for Human evolution.

Five years back, I received one such below , as IT went boom and life is much around with computers.
A year back, life became go-mobile and people started doing all the stuff with smart phones..
I thought people are going crazy.. creating these type of images, as and when a new technology come into place... but...

last week, I came to see a picture which is completely different from the above two pics.  It had lot of messages in it. Its about man becoming obese by eating too much. The article covered the line saying, earth's resources are being utilized by people, where it is supposed to be consumed by the double the size of current population.

The above picture is surely not good for the human evolution. Eat healthy, at the same time, one should keep body fit.

A Grinder in the stomach

This happened, when my sister was a pre-schooler. On a weekend,  myself, my father and younger sister were chatting at the living room after lunch. My sister asked a question to my Dad. What happens to the food we eat?

My father wanted to explain her in easy way. Hence told that , there is a grinder inside stomach. It will grind and digest the food. She then asked if the grinder will be running for ever. Father told, yes. so that what ever you eat every day it keeps on grinding and digest the food.

 She seemed to be satisfied with the answer. I was aware of digestion and its after process,but I had never thought to know or to see , how the food is digested. However, on hearing about grinder, I was curious enough to see how that grinder will be. But that is not possible. I cannot just like that cut open a human body to see its inner parts.

 I left the curiosity to know on it. After a year or two, I got to know about the inner body parts in science subject and the teacher showed the picture of liver, pancreas, small intestine and large intestine etc., I was looking for a grinder like stuff there, but nothing of that sort was present. The teacher also did not spell out a word of grinding or grinder..

Ouch.. My father had told us something which will be easy for understanding. I had taken it as such.

P.S :  I recollected this incident , when our son asked similar such question like my sister.

Travel by Winch

 I do not remember when exactly this happend. Surely before my pre-teen. A plan was made for hill temple visit.
 The temple of Lord Muruga in Palani. (100 km southeast of Coimbatore and a similar distance northwest of Madurai)

 As most kids do, I was also questioning my mother about temple. She was explaining me that it has three modes to reach top of hill.

 1) The stair case way
 2) The slope way
 3) The Winch way

 As I had seen the stair case way in Rockfort temple @ Trichy, I was questioning about the other two. My mother told the slope way will be easy way than stair case and added that elephant of the temple cannot walk up via stair case so this path would be used. The Winch, it is like a small train which will go up the hill on a track. Having seen only a train running on the ground, I was quizzed how it will reach the top of hill.

 I should have got enough patience to wait for the day, to see the Winch in person and then to travel. But still, I could not keep shut. I kept on asking questions.

 How Winch will work ? My mother told, must be like the normal train , this will also move up on a track. (I was thinking, some answer to keep me shut....) she added, I have also not seen it in person. Lets see on that day.

 I got doubt. Since the Winch on hill is going vertically up, will it not fall down? My small brain understood that some sort of gravity pull is needed to keep the Winch on track. But I did not know how to ask on it clearly. I asked her is it safe as Winch is going up the hill. My mother got irritated by my question. Yet she said, it is similar to the train. Don't fear.

 Well, I belong to the yesterday age. My mother did not have any photo or video to show me how it works. I was worried, how safe the Winch journey would be.

 The day arrived and we reached Palani hills and all were set to travel in Winch. There were two tracks. On one track , Winch was on top of hill and on other track, Winch was waiting at bottom of hill for us to board. We used Winch to reach top of hill. Prayed God. For the return trip we chose the stair case, as one Winch has already started to move towards ground, other Winch was on way to reach top of hill and more over a big queue was waiting to board.

 The story does not end here. I had to brief up about the Winch experience. All were thrilled to travel by Winch. After all seats are filled in, Winch started moving up. I was quiet excited and enjoyed the journey.

 When the Winch was half way up, it stopped. We all were seated in the Winch for more than fifteen minutes, but it did not move up. People were discussing, power down or some technical issues.
 My mother gave a look at me and murmured at a low voice, you questioned if it is safe etc., because of which only it has got problem and Winch stopped. How come my casual question can be a reason for Winch to stop half way?. I wanted to ask, but I kept quiet. Winch, however started after thirty minutes halt.

 On reaching the top of hill, every one got down and moved towards temple. By that point only I noticed the big and strong string tied up with the Winch. Oh!! This is what I was asking for. Had my mother explained me these at first telling me what a Winch means, I would not have asked further questions.

 Seven years back, they have started the rope car in Palani temple. Not sure when I'll have visit to temple in near future. If we plan for such trip, our son will surely have same set of questions on Winch and Rope car. Well, his questions will be answered immediately. Whenever he asks about something which he had not seen (stuff like parachute, gliders etc) his dad connects laptop to internet and explain him with photos and possible YouTube videos.

 Lets see, we don't know when Lord Muruga @ Palani temple has fixed his visiting time with us.

 P.S. : I have not provided any photos, as we did not have camera at that time to click on the Winch. If you haven't seen Winch , Lot of Palani Winch pictures are there on web. You might search it for yourself if needed.

Just a note...

Twenty four hours a day is just not enough for me, being a working mom with two kids.

One would say, with all the electrical and electronic gadgets @home things are quiet easy. Still I had to do parallel tasks most of time, so that I get sufficient time for spending time with family and have buffer time for unplanned events that fall in and to have personal time for myself too...

Of course, I can cut off an hour sleep to get the sufficient time, which I can not do , for the following reasons.

1. I am late to bed and because of that I can't afford to wake up early morning.
2. I don't get continuous six hours sleep having an infant and preschooler at home.
3. Last but not the least, I enjoy to sleep and relax.

There are many ways we can effectively save time in our daily chores, be it cooking or cleaning or shopping or working or reading or .. lot of or's with the tasks. Still I am quiet busy these days....

coming to the point.. having been busy at home and office, no time to scribble here..

Home Appliances without electricity usage

When I was a kid, Most of families had all traditional items at home for meeting the home needs.

As days moved on, people started to buy items which works with the help of electricity. Listed below are few among them.

Tube light

Fan
Table Fan
mixie
Grinder

Vacuum Cleaner
Washing machine

Slowly, the traditional items started to disappear in many houses as it was occupying considerable amount of space in the room.

Now, that we are  seeing frequent power cuts, people started using inverter. The domestic inverter does not support the power consumption of heavy items like grinder , washing machine etc.

Well, why to go for inverter, when we still have items which works without electricity. It is good that we grab them from the market before it run out of stock.

Pictures provided for easy reference folks...

 Candle Lamp

 Panai Olai visiri

 Traditional mixie (Ammi kal)

Traditional Wet Grinder (Attan kal)

Traditional Dry Grinder (Ural with Ulakkai)

 little ural for grinding spices
Broom for cleaning

Washing stone for clothes
Pictures got by searching in Google images

I know.. In the fast moving world, we can't afford to spend hours of time in using these stuff.

This is just a post to record the items which were used in the past generation (of course still used in current generation too.. :-)

Bed time stories

Our little darling at home, sleeps after hearing bed time stories. Every day he used to ask for new stories.

But these days his story line is fixed. We have to tell him tom and Jerry story only. He picked up this as he liked the tom and Jerry cartoon much.

His favourite episodes: Tom & Jerry with Duck

Every day we have to tell new episodes. But how do we tell new episodes without watching them? So we started our own Tom and Jerry episode.

Tom and Jerry Attending school...
Tom and Jerry going to beach...
Tom and Jerry travel in train to native for vacation...
Tom and Jerry visiting the Park...
Tom and Jerry doing shopping... etc etc..

The stories tied up with his activities.. It went on for a week and he understood the story line. On knowing story is coming to end, he started to modify the story line by a twist and making us to drag the story.

Upon completion of the lengthy story, he will ask for next story. I told him that I forgot and need some time to think and tell. Suddenly he told; Amma, I will tell a story. You listen and tell me back the same story. Clever boy. He said one tom and Jerry episode and asked me to repeat it. We have to tell it back, with the same story line as he said. If I make mistake he corrects it too. Oh no. This is tough.. A bed time story at 11pm and that too without making mistakes..

Atbroker.exe application error

I use remote desktop to connect to a PC with Windows 7 . Got the Atbroker.exe application error followed by black screen. Could not view the desktop despite closing and reopening the session. Same error throw-ed out.

On surfing net, got a solution which works most of time.

Press "CTRL-ALT-END" (the equivalent of “CTRL-ALT-DEL” for remote sessions) followed by ESC / starting Task Manager from the options listed. - It worked for me.

When it doesn’t work, log in with another user and kill the session with the issue or reboot the pc.

Pentaxim Vs EasyFive

This post is about the DTP vaccine for babies.

DTP which is supposed to cover the vaccine for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus.

Wiki states below for DTap and DTwP:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DTaP (also DTPa and TDaP) - is a combined vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, in which the pertussis component is acellular. This is in contrast to whole-cell, inactivated DTP (aka DTwP)
The acellular vaccine uses selected antigens of the pertussis pathogen to induce immunity. Because it uses fewer antigens than the whole cell vaccines, it is considered safer, but it is also more expensive. Most of the developed world has switched to DTaP, but developing countries continue to use DTP.Recent research suggests that the DTP vaccine is more effective than DTaP in conferring immunity; this is because DTaP's narrower antigen base is less effective against current pathogen strains.
The acellular vaccine is safer to administer in that it causes substantially fewer side-effects (estimated at 90% fewer), which commonly include local pain and redness, and/or fever.
DTaP was developed in Japan in 1981.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now doctors suggest the painless injection (Pentaxim), saying the medicine works the same, but the child will not cry in pain, but we have to pay more (medicine is costly). For the comfort of the infant, parents also go for it.

Below is the detail got in internet for the two medicines.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Both vaccines provide protection against five diseases but there is a difference in the diseases covered.
Pentaxim covers Diptheria, Whooping cough (by acellular component, which adds to cost but has less pain, fever for the infant), Tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b and IPV (injectable polio vaccine).
Easy Five covers Diptheria, Whooping cough (cellular component, which is cheap but has more chances of side effects like pain, fever for the infant), Tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b and Hepatitis B. Pentaxim is costlier vaccine.
Whichever vaccine you choose, protection MUST be provided for the six diseases. Thus with Pentaxim, you have to give additional Hepatitis B vaccine and with Easy Five, additional Polio vaccine (oral polio vaccine or the costlier injectable polio vaccine). The protection offered for the diseases that these two products offer is comparable but the side effects are somewhat lower with Pentaxim. In summary, you will have to make the decision on the basis of above facts, especially cost considerations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Four years back, Doctor at native refused to put Easy Five stating that he prefers to put DTP , HIB and Hepatatis B separately. In a period of four years, new medicines have come and reduced the number of injections to the infant.

Though few vaccines are clubbed to a single injection, every year new vaccines are coming and chart is growing big and bigger.

Hanuman asks Jangiri?

In the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi (normally comes between Dec 15 and Jan 14). I could not visit the temple this time, however saw the picture of deity decorated with jangiri (sweet similar to that of jilebi of north india). I could not post a picture of the same here for reference.

I only have a temple website link which states the same.

[On the day of Moola nakshathiram vadai malai, vetrilai malai and jangiri malai are dedicated devotedly to the God.]

I have heard that vadamalai offering to Anjaneya other than the butter, tulsi etc.Hanuman being the God of strength these vadamalai (full of protein content) is offered and distributed to the people to inherit the strength like Hanuman.

On surfing net, I could see offerings like sandal, coconut, sugarcane, fruits , vegetables and even dry fruits has been used for decorating the God.

Below are few such pictures of Lord Hanuman.

Susindram Anjaneyar in sandhana alangaram

Namakkal Anjaneyar in butter alangaram

Nellai Anjaneyar in coconut alangaram

Anjaneyar in sugar cane alangaram

anjaneyar in vadai, butter , grapes ,cherry & tulasi alangaram

Anjaneyar in vadamaalai alangaram

Anjaneyar in fruits alangaram

Anjaneyar in dry fruits alangaram

But when they started this jangiri?

Could that be because vadamalai is hot and spicy and people wanted to eat something sweet along with it ?

Or this came from north india where people like sweets and this is the one which can be added to a string like maalai ?Anjaneya, english, God, hanuman,

Or sweet stall people wanted to boost up the sales of sweets by this?

Or Lord Hanuman itself wanted to taste sweet and asked jangiri ?

*********************************************************************************

(e.g widow )

I'm back!!!

Yippee!!! I'm back after a break.

A pregnant colleague of mine had told that, if she gets chance to talk to God, she will request that, Men should also undergo the process of pregnancy like women.

I was on my maternity leave that time. Oh my God! what happened to her? Women should be happy and proud that they blessed with this ability.

Men can only reach a place of becoming an obstetrician and perform the delivery of a women.

In a movie, comedy actor vivek said, ladies are telling they are pregnant and getting privileges, however there are men , who live with big tummy till their life time.
Big tummy for decade does not make any sense, when compared to a live fetus at womb for a week. It was not a joke actually.

As far as I know, Only male seahorse is blessed to have the gestation of 2 to 6 weeks in its pouch and hatch the eggs.

A sudden thought came to my mind. Would men be ready to undergo the process for 40 weeks like women do? Not at all. May be, few want to try just to explore how it would be and few might be ready to take, if they get good salary package for the 280 days job. (good joke?)

Men are designed to sweat.. they are capable of doing hard things. They cant afford to do tender job. Why to request God for a role change or perform dual role ?
